• Ithell Colquhoun, Elemental

    31 May - 26 July 2024
  • Ben Hunter is pleased to present Elemental, a solo exhibition of work by Ithell Colquhoun (1906-1988). Colquhoun was a British painter and writer whose significant contributions to 20th Century art are rooted in surrealism, automatism, occultism, and esoteric philosophy. In 2019, her archive of more than 5000 works was acquired by the Tate.

Elemental presents an overview of Colquhoun’s practice, placing emphasis on the breadth of her oeuvre and the continuity of her ideas across her artistic career. The exhibition will incorporate major works illustrating her engagement with diverse art historical periods, Celtic Revivalism, queer subcultures, and her exceptional exploration of different creative techniques.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue featuring newly commissioned essays by Dr. Richard Shillitoe and Jacqui McIntosh, two leading scholars on Colquhoun’s work. The exhibition will open to coincide with London Gallery Weekend.
